Juniors 

***Please note that your blogpost is DUE at 9:00 pm. That means you should have it written and ready to go earlier, so that you can post and iron out any issues that come up. Make sure to look at the prompt and requirements an hour or two beforehand to avoid any last minute surprises. 

Instructions

1. Head on over to our AP class blog at aplanguagepower.blogspot.com .
2. Read the prompt carefully. The work you did in class and as homework for Friday will help you, but it is not enough on its own to fulfill the requirements of the assignment.
3. Draft your response on a google doc or a word document. Check it more than once, using the checklists to guide you.
4. Post it in the COMMENTS section of the blog post.
5. Sign it with your first name and last initial.
6. Pat yourself on the back for completing your first online response.

Seniors

1. Answer the prompt: What is Francesca Ramsey's message about the stereotypes of "real men" and how does she convey this message?

2. All memes that were shared with the correct email address have comments on them. Your printed and revised memes are due on Monday along with a draft of the letter of introduction. You can find the rubric and examples of the letter at this link: Click Here. Remember that each member of your partnership should be writing about a separate meme. This means that you can work together on aspects of the letter but will each be analyzing a different meme. To summarize, the following assignments are due on Monday: 

1.) Your final revised meme, two copies of each printed and ready to display.

1. Read three out of the four college essays at this link: College Essay. Choose one that you admire, either for the style of the writing or the subject matter.

2. Make the four revisions to your personal essay that you identified on Friday in class.

Announcement! If you feel the topic of your flashdraft will work for your college essay, great! If not, you have one week to write another flashdraft. You can do it at home or in my classroom sometime next week.

Juniors

2.)  Complete the draft of your meme so that you're ready to work on a more polished version in class tomorrow.

3.) Bring in all of the necessary supplies to finish your PSA/Memes IN CLASS. I will have computers, markers, large chart paper and scissors. One thing to keep in mind is that your job is to appeal and persuade a SPECIFIC audience, not to entertain yourself. Can't wait to see these projects come to life!

Go through your notebook tonight and choose a topic/jotting that you want to develop into a full personal essay. Tomorrow you will write a flashdraft for 30 minutes. It will be your first writing grade. If you want to do more brainstorming tonight, I have listed the generating strategies we've done together thus far below: 

1. Respond to prompts: Personal Narrative Bingo
2. Draw/list/choose a memory that is most vivid and write in first person present-tense: Journaling Prompts
3. Map a meaningful location. Mark an X and an annotation where specific things happened to you there.
4. Brainstorm your most distinguished traits. Next to each trait, list moments when you demonstrated that trait most clearly.
5. A. Consider how your perspective has changed:

I used be _____, but now I am ______

I used to have _____, but now I have ______

I used to think _____, but now I know______

For each of the above, think of SPECIFIC MEMORIES that illustrate how you were then and another SPECIFIC MEMORY for how you are now. Write out those moments, using journaling prompts: Journaling Prompts

In other words, where can you identify a lack of information, problem, misconception, or opportunity for positive change that you can address through a meme, public service announcement or advertisement? *Note that this cannot be related to the elevator ;)

1. Brainstorm a list of five positive qualities that describe you. It might feel a little awkward because we are not accustomed to thinking of ourselves. Do it anyway! 

2. Then, make a web or write about times you demonstrated those qualities. Be as specific as possible. You should fill a page for full credit.

Write for seven uninterrupted minutes in your notebook, either describing one of the memories that connects to the moment you wrote about today or looking back at your notebook for something else. Weekend Homework 9/8

Juniors 

Watch the two performances of the Star Spangled Banner linked below. Then, compare them, using the rhetorical situation framework that you learned in class yesterday using the following questions: 

-What is the context of each situation? 
-What is the specific occasion? 
-Who is the speaker? (This should be a more detailed answer than the name of the artist and may require brief research.) 
-Who are the audiences, both intended and unintended? 
-What is the purpose? 
-What is the relationship between the purpose and audience in this situation? 
-How do the two performances compare and contrast? Cite at least three details from each performance in your answer. How does this comparison alter the meaning of the "Star-Spangled Banner?" 

*Bonus questions - How would you describe the tone of each performance?

Repeat the process we did in class on Friday. You can use a timer or give yourself more time. It is up to you. 

1. Draw what you think of when you think of a hero. (4 minutes) 
2. List times in your life when "did the RIGHT thing" (1.5 minutes) 
3. Circle the memory that is clearest in your mind. 
4. Start a new page, and write up that moment, using the following questions to develop the narrative. Spend five minutes on 20, writing it up in the first-person, present tense. 

Use these questions to help you write the narrative - the actual telling of the story’s events.

Where are you? What time of day or night does it seem to be? What season does it seem to be? How do you know? Where does the light seem to be coming from? What kind of light is it? What’s the temperature like? What does the air smell like? What are you doing? Is there anyone else in the image with you? What are they doing? What does he/she look like and say? Why are you there? What are some of the sounds you can hear? What are some of the things you can see? What’s directly in front of you? If you turn your head to the right, what’s there? If you turn your head to the left, what’s there? What’s behind you? What’s below and around your feet? What’s above your head? There’s something you haven’t noticed yet. What is it? (It can be very small.

20. If you wrote the answers to the above questions as a list. Rewrite in the first person PRESENT tense, as if it is happening to you right now.
