Homework, Monday, December 8

Do the Right Thing -

1. Get caught up on your reading tonight, paying close attention to how setting develops the characters in the novel. Find two passages to discuss in class tomorrow where the setting:

-Develops or defines the character
-Shapes the plot or conflict
-Reflects, emphasizes, or contrasts the character's mental state
-Serves a symbolic function
-Evokes a mood or atmosphere

2. Choose a song as the soundtrack for a chapter of the novel and/or a photograph that captures the setting. Be ready to explain why you chose it.

AP Language and Composition -

1. Read and annotate the Lopate article, "On Turning Yourself Into a Character." Do all of the annotations on the article, including summarizing the main point of marked paragraphs (M.P.), discussing the figurative language (F.L.), and writing a thesis based on the prompt at the end. Define the circled words in your notebook (use your own language, not the dictionary language).

2. Complete one more free write (1-2 handwritten pages) and choose a topic for your personal essay.

3. The rough draft of your essay will be due on Wednesday. The final essay will have a word limit of 750-850 words. I am letting you know in advance in case you want to get a head start.
