Do the Right Thing
Today we discussed gentrification, "a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district, a related increase in rents and property values, and changes in the district's character and culture."
Tonight, reflect on your own experience involving gentrification as well as your opinions about gentrification. Your reflection should be about two notebook pages.
Here are your options:
1.) Describe a neighborhood before, during, or after gentrification. You may want to write two contrasting descriptions.
2.) How does the topic of gentrification relate to themes/central ideas that you tend to notice in life, lit, school? Give one or two examples of where else you've noticed this theme/central idea/concept.
3.) What are the reasons for your current beliefs or attitudes towards gentrification? What examples support this reasoning? Provide personal experience, anecdotes based on observations, current events, and or things you've learned (historical info, literature, independent research, school content) to support your reasoning.
4.) Tell a story about gentrification from two different points of view.
AP Language and Composition
Intro: Today I shared the EQ's of our unit on narrative rebellion. Here they are:
- How do writers and artists draw on narrative traditions to break new ground?
- How do the details in a narrative or descriptive work contribute to its meaning as a whole?
- What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of speaking or remaining silent?
Task: Tonight, read over the questions again. Keep them in mind as you research Alison Bechdel, Fun Home, and comics. Make sure that you read at least TWO sources individually and that between you and your table mates, you will have read ALL of the sources as a group. You can find the sources on the AP Language and Composition tab of this blog. Tomorrow, be ready to share your research and discuss the questions above in terms of your research.
Reminder***
Please bring 10.00 tomorrow in order to purchase a copy of Fun Home,
