Seniors
Tonight, find a mentor text in the genre you chose. A mentor text is an example of a literary work that you can use as inspiration. You can find the stories and poems we read in this unit so far in the "texts and links" tab of this blog as well as those from other units. Remember too that you have access to the award winners in the stations link from yesterday's homework. You may also find an example of a literary work in your chosen genre on your own.

Finish reading and viewing, if possible, Obama's farewell speech: http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-obama-farewell-speech-transcript-20170110-story.html. As you read, track strategies: narratives, examples (what types), definitions, cause and effect, arguments etc. AND techniques: figurative language, juxtaposition, characterization (of Americans, America, his wife etc.), diction, tone...

Then, evaluate: how do his techniques and strategies help him achieve the purposes we discussed at the beginning of class? Which does he achieve? Which are more elusive? Ultimately, is this an effective speech for the occasion? Why and/or why not? We will discuss it at the beginning of class tomorrow.
