FEBRUARY BREAK HOMEWORK

Seniors

1. Please buy a new composition notebook for second semester, but do not throw your first semester notebook away. You will need to transfer some notes from first to second semester.

2. If you have not brought 5.00 for your ticket to Othello, please do so. If you cannot pay for a ticket and have not discussed it with me, please write me an email letting me know.

3. Extra Credit - Watch the movie O. Then, write a review of it, focusing on whether or not it is an appropriate film to watch as a class. Make sure you have clear reasons supporting your assertion with evidence from the text. Post your review on the class blog or send it to me by Feb. 22.

AP Language - Juniors

1. Please purchase a 3 ring binder and paper. Go through your handouts. Hold on to those you can continue to use and put them in the binder in an organized fashion.

2. There is an AP study session on Saturday, March 5 hosted by the grant that funds our AP program. Attendance has been shown to improve students' scores. You can sign up to attend here: March 5, 2015 – Manhattan Site – N.Y.C. Museum School - https://apex-sss2-manhattan-english.eventbrite.com<https://apex-sss2-manhattan-english.eventbrite.com/

3. Extra credit

Option 1: Write a rhetorical analysis essay on a text of your choosing. Some that come to mind recently are the Formation video by Beyonce, a speech or portion of a debate by one of the presidential candidates,  a film, or Kanye's new fashion collection. The essay should include all of the close reading moves of a rhetorical essay. In other words: what is the implied/explicit argument and how does the speaker make it? Credit will be equivalent to two blog posts and will be graded based on the rhetorical analysis rubric. For example, proficient essays will receive 85% of total credit etc. Note that this can only help your grade. Essays should be around 500 words.

Option 2:  Read one or two or three of the articles below or find one on your own (I will add to the list. Send recommendations!) Read carefully and write a precis paragraph on the article. Next, write a paragraph on the article's significance why we should or should not read the article as a class. If you have a different idea of how to demonstrate your understanding, propose a different type of assignment to show what you learned. Each two paragraphs will receive extra credit up to the amount received for one blog post. Extra credit value will be based on the quality of the work. For example, proficient paragraphs would receive 85% of total credit, or 8.5 points etc. Note that this can only help your grade.
