Homework, Thursday, October 1

Seniors 

1. Complete your summary of each stanza of "Leda and the Swan" by William Butler Yeats ( poem available here).
2. Then, answer the following questions in your notebook to prepare for tomorrow's discussion.

a.) Which words and phrases characterize Leda (at least 5)?
b.) Which words and phrases characterize the swan (at least 5)?
c.) Which lines or words remain ambiguous? In other words, where does the poem leave matters uncertain?
d.) At the end of the poem, Yeats flashes forward to a description of the destruction of Troy, Why might he have chosen to include this in the poem?
e.) What questions or issues does this poem raise?
f.) In the unit overview I said that literary violence is often symbolic of some aspect of human nature.What do you think that Zeus's disguise symbolizes? What aspects of society or human nature are illuminated by the events of the poem?
g.) Does this poem have any relevance to us as an SOF community? To you as a group of young people?
