Homework!

Homework:
Carrie - Read and annotate to page 177
Perfume - Read and annotate Ch. 10-13

IF YOU WERE ABSENT TODAY, YOU NEED TO MAKE UP THE STATION WORK DESCRIBED BELOW.

Do now: How does Stephen King build suspense in the last ten pages of "Blood Sport?" Write down your thoughts in a bulleted list on the google doc you wrote your quiz on last week. Consider how things change between Carrie and her mother, what Chris does at the prom and the characterization of Billy.

Before we read The Laramie Project, we did historical, thematic, and biographical research to improve our understanding of the play and the historical events that inspired it. Another way to research a text is to to develop context while you're reading. Today, we will research Stephen King, proms, and critical responses to Carrie in order to understand its context better. By researching how it was written, the critical response to the book and the film, and some of the themes and institutions that it includes, you will be able to view it as a cultural artifact rather than just a story.

This is the kind of research you can do for your English exhibition. Theses sources provide counterclaims/interpretations that you could add to your analysis or use to develop your ideas. Filmmakers and journalists also do this kind of research in order to more fully understand their subjects.

You should spend 10-15 minutes on each station, using discussion and note-taking as you go. You should have a record of your work that may be graded.

Station 1: THEMATIC/HISTORICAL RESEARCH
PROM!!! Read this article about the tradition of prom and connect it to the text. Is Prom an institution?  Station One

Station 2: BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH
Stephen King threw Carrie in the trash! Watch this interview of Stephen King for his story on how he wrote Carrie and the effect it had on his career.

Before you view the clip, read through the questions that you'll answer after the video.

  • What is your impression of Stephen King? Is he different than you expected?
  • What lesson can we learn from Stephen King about the creative process?
  • Based on his interview, how would you describe his attitude about Carrie as a work of literature?

Click here to watch the interview. Once you go to the google doc, download the video to your computer:  Station Two

Station 3: CRITICAL INTERPRETATIONS (Difficult, but worth it!)

Guiding questions and the article can be found here: Station Three
