Homework 11/4

Today, we discussed the Gothic.

If you were absent or just want a review, click here: Power point on Gothic as a literary movement

Homework:

1. Read and annotate "Blood-burning Moon" (link to story) for setting, characterization, symbol, and effect.
  • It is short, so you may want to read it more than once in preparation for discussion on Wednesday
  • There is also a lot of information about the story online and I encourage you to research it
2. Write two paragraphs IN YOUR NOTEBOOK on how the story qualifies as Gothic. What makes it (or doesn't make it) a Gothic story? Make sure your paragraphs are complete with a topic sentence, context, evidence, analysis, and a concluding/transitional sentence

*Extra credit article on The Shining: watch the film and read the article "From Domestic Nightmares to the Nightmare of History: Uncanny Eruptions of Violence in King's and Kubrick's Versions of The Shining." There isn't a PDF of the article available but I have copies at school. For credit, you need to be able to identify the argument and summarize the four parts of the article.Alink to the Article on google books

Another option: View any version of Dracula or Frankenstein and write a five paragraph paper about its Gothic elements.

Class 12CD -- Buy Carrie

*I will determine credit based on demonstrated understanding and effort.
