Homework, Tuesday

Seniors -- Be prepared for a quiz on characterization and setting in Chapters 1-2 of Sharp Objects
11A: Chapter 38, 39, 40; Summaries of 36-37 below

Chapter 36
Grenouille begins to work for a new perfume shop owned by Madame Arnulfi. Her husband passed away and she now lives with her journeymen, Druot. Grenouille lives in a shack and receives a snack each day. The narrator describes how Madame Arnulfi and Grenouille create scents from flowers and packages the perfume.  

Chapter 37
Grenouille does everything that Druot orders. Although he has to do a lot of work, he is able to closely observe the process. He is able to use his nose to determine when the oil was heated just right or when enouhj alchohol had been mixed. He tells Druot when he should stop mixing or begin the second step. Since Grenouille acts submissive, Druot follows Grenouille's suggestions. Druot begins to let Grenouille have more control over the system. Druot is amazed that Grenouille does not use his incredible talent to make money. Druot and Madame begin to leave Grenouille more alone and Grenouille barely sees or talks to anyone.
