Homework, Wednesday, October 29

Do the Right Thing:

1.) 11CD and 12AB-- Read "Ask Me If I Care" by Jennifer Egan, annotating the text for how the author portrays the characters using STEAL. There will likely be a quiz on the story tomorrow.

2.) 12CD - Finish the article you started in class today. Be ready to share the central ideas and compelling evidence in class tomorrow.

2.) Seniors - If you are having trouble posting your blog commentary onto yesterday's post, add it to the google doc at the following link and I will make sure it is published tonight: commentaries. We all love reading your contributions, so be sure to get the commentary to me no later than 9:00 pm tonight. Otherwise, it will go into the gradebook as a zero.

IF you would like to post about the article you read in class today, feel free to do so.

Here are the instructions from yesterday:

In class today, you did some research into how the stories and the novel we've read together represent male and female characters. Tonight, write a commentary in the comments section of this blog post that responds to one of the following questions that came up in class or addresses one of the unit's EQ's.

Remember that you are writing for an audience and while your tone need not be as formal as it is for a paper, you should still use appropriate language.

Questions brought up in class:

-In Flight, are moral dilemmas presented as male dilemmas? Why doesn't Zits ever inhabit a female character?

-In "Until Gwen," does Denis Lehane criticize or perpetuate violence against women?

In your post, discuss the implications of our research today. Does it matter how authors' represent male and female characters? What are the implications of your research?

*ALERT! Draft your work on a google doc or word document beforehand in case it does not post.

AP L & C: Type out the thesis statement and analytic paragraph you developed in class. Make sure that the following components are included in your paragraph: a clear topic sentence, correctly embedded evidence (at least two pieces),  analysis of evidence and its effect (use the sentence starters and diction/syntax questions to help you) and transitions throughout. If you were absent or late today, you are still responsible for the assignment. Ask a classmate for guidance.

  1. In all the works we read, “Until Gwen”, “Escape From Spiderhead”, “The Lottery”, “The Veldt” and Flight show how the implications of the way women are portrayed in these works contribute to everyday sexism that women face today. Growing up women will always learn from a male perspective, only hearing their opinions and that their opinions are the only opinions that are worth hearing. The woman's opinions or thoughts will not be heard because in most books and movies men are the protagonists. Women are often portrayed only through their looks and in Flight this is most obvious. In the novel Flight one is able to see how Alexie really views women in the last chapter when Zits finally meets his new family. He describes the mother as hot and tells the reader what she is wearing. The mother makes breakfast for the family, helps Zits with his acne and by the story they were hugging and she was crying. This is how most women are portrayed in novels or short stories, with very little personality and being an extremely cliche character. In “Escape From Spiderhead”, another story with a male protagonist George Saunders uses women only for sex. In “Until Gwen” by Dennis Lehane both characters remember the stepmom flipping pancakes as if that was all she did, not a very memorable thing to remember someone by. These stories are only a few that depict women in a certain way that shows directly how the world values womens opinions and thoughts.

Ultimately the author wants me to understand that advertisements have strong effects on the citizens of todays society. Also that messages about sex, objectifies women and portrays the opposite message of what sex is suppose to portray. In the novel this certain quote portrays the specific evils within our society today. Also how media is the most influential thing in our electronic world today. “Sex in advertising is more about disconnection and distance than connection and closeness” The connotation of the quote shows how people in this world has negative effects on society today. Another example is when the article states that “Sex in advertising is pornographic because it is dehumanizing and objectifies people, especially women, and because it fetishizes products, imbues them with an erotic charge” Based off the information given it shows the flaws in our society today and how our media is the most influential power our country
