Tonight, read the remaining columns from the Room for Debate discussion about whether or not the American Dream is attainable. For each source, T.A.G., background, and Conquer: What does each writer want to inform you about and persuade you? For each column, pull one piece of evidence that you find MOST persuasive in support of the conquer. Be ready for a debate tomorrow in which you will weigh in: What determines our ability to achieve the American Dream?

Room for Debate
*Intro: While the phrase, "The American Dream" may not have entered the lexicon until the 1930's, the concept of upward mobility is an integral aspect of our democracy. The first white Americans fled Europe's aristocracy, and people from all over the world continue to come to America with the goal of transcending the social circumstances in which they were born. Many of us aim for upward mobility, the capacity to strive towards a higher social and economic position. But what determines our ability to do so?
