Paper Assignment
By Monday, you should have the entire graphic organizer complete for your short story. You do not have to keep the formatting as I presented it; the requirement is that you do all of the steps of the lens. If you would rather write in paragraphs, that's fine too. Represent it however you want, just make sure you answer all of the question and have evidence to back up your answers. Think of this as a group quiz. It will count as TWO reading grades.

*Intro: While the phrase, "The American Dream" may not have entered the lexicon until the 1930's, the concept of upward mobility is an integral aspect of our democracy. The first white Americans fled Europe's aristocracy, and people from all over the world continue to come to America with the goal of transcending the social circumstances in which they were born. Many of us aim for upward mobility, the capacity to strive towards a higher social and economic position. But what determines our ability to do so? Is it our intelligence? Or is it where we live? Today you'll watch a documentary that presents a fascinating perspective.
*Please know and hold onto the information in this intro, including the terms "aristocracy" and "upward mobility."
Task: With a partner, watch the Retro Report "Where Does the American Dream Live?" You will need to pause and rewind to get all of the information.
https://www.retroreport.org/video/where-does-the-american-dream-live/. You should pause and rewind to repeat info. Here's what you need to note and know.
-Keep a timeline of the events described: how do the events evolve over time?
-What kind of evidence does the documentary use to support its argument? What information does it provide? Look at our megachart in the front of the room to help you remember all of the types of evidence and techniques. Then, RANK the evidence. Which is the MOST persuasive?
-What are the different viewpoints presented on the relationship between housing and upward mobility?
-Overall, what is the argument of the documentary?
