AP Language and Composition - Blog post on ch. 1-4 due today by 2:15. Read ch. 5 and be prepared for quiz/discussion tomorrow.
Intro: Our class seems to be in agreement that the American Dream is, to a degree, a myth. However, what warrants further discussion of why this concept perseveres despite evidence to the contrary. The texts that we are reading in this unit offer perspectives on the conditions that make the American dream attainable and the intended and unintended consequences of the belief in the American Dream. As you read The Great Gatsby and the other texts of the unit, I would like you to keep this question in mind.
Blog Post: According to Fitzgerald, what conditions make the American dream attainable for some and unattainable for others? What effect does the pursuit and belief in American Dream have on the characters' psychology, social lives, and morals?
Examples
You might consider how the portrayals of Daisy or Myrtle or Jordan offer perspectives on how women negotiate the American Dream and its effect on them....
Or, you might consider how Tom and Wilson's economic power influences their behavior and speech.
Or, you might consider how Nick is psychologically affected by the reality of wealth in comparison to his fantasy of it....and so on. It is your choice.
Checklist or requirements are on our class blog aplanguagepower.blogspot.com. Feel free to text me on Remind with questions.
