Answer the following questions as you read “Ysrael,” the first short story in Drown:
- Bottom of page 4: What details does Diaz include that depict life in DR for this family and indicate potential reasons for their eventual immigration?
- Bottom of page 6: How does Diaz introduce the idea of machismo through the character Rafa? Choose the passage where Diaz makes this concept most visible. What might he be suggesting here, about Rafa or about how boys learn to become men?
- Top of page 9 (“And his nose. Anything that sticks out.”): How does Diaz introduce the motif of violence, injury, and illness in this passage? How does he introduce the motif of masks?
- Choose one passage for the motifs of The American Dream and machismo. Then provide analysis: what are these passages really about?
